The documentary film that delves into the grassroots movement that supported former Vice President Leni Robredo’s 2022 presidential bid is set to be screened for one day only at the Marina Theater in San Francisco on Sunday, Dec. 8.

Directed by award-winning Filipino American filmmaker Ramona Diaz, “And So It Begins” has made waves and history as the official entry of the Philippines for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards, scheduled for March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

Ahead of the prestigious awarding ceremony next year, the special screening event in San Francisco will also feature a post-screening conversation with Diaz herself, moderated by renowned filmmaker and educator Carrie Lozano.

For the uninitiated, the documentary marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time the Film Academy of the Philippines has selected a documentary film to represent the nation in this category.

In a Facebook post, Diaz shared her shock and gratitude upon learning that her film has been chosen for the Academy Awards consideration.

“So this happened. And So It Begins was chosen to represent the Philippines at the 97th Academy Awards. I am still in shock,” she wrote, thanking the Film Academy of the Philippines jurors for their support.

She further expressed her deep connection to the subject matter, explaining, “I make documentary films to bear witness and to try to understand the homeland.”

Diaz’s film also provides an intimate portrayal of the political landscape, offering a lens into the struggles and hopes of everyday Filipinos who fought for democracy during a tumultuous election season.

Join Diaz on Dec. 8 for an inspiring evening that celebrates the power of documentary filmmaking, activism and the ongoing journey of understanding the Philippines’ political landscape. Tickets are available here.
